About The Organization
Ulster Literacy Association is a 501(c)(3) organization with a long-established commitment to empower families through literacy and volunteer support. For more than 40 years, ULA has welcomed adult learners from all walks of life who want to learn basic reading skills as well as English as a new language in a safe, confidential setting. Working with trained volunteer tutors, our learners achieve goals they set for themselves, such as obtaining a driver’s license, participating in parent/teacher conferences, obtaining US citizenship, or finding and keeping a fulfilling job.
ULA is a financially sound and accredited organization, operating with an annual budget of approximately $250,000-$300,000. With a loyal donor base of institutions and individuals, an engaged governing board, a dedicated staff, and about 200 volunteer tutors, ULA today serves roughly 400 adult learners through a range of literacy programs offered free of charge. Programs have included one-to-one tutoring; English for Parents; English for Farm Families; writing and life skills at the Ulster Correctional Facility; classroom support at the Ulster BOCES (Boards of Cooperative Educational Services); and other off-site workplace programs. Since 2017, ULA has been the sole administering agency for Americorps’ Retired Senior Volunteer Program in Ulster County. We strive to engage experienced older adults with our mission and keep them involved in community activities.
The ULA community is diverse and peopled with life-long learners and mentors who have something special to give—love of language, caring for others, and motivation to strengthen the community. Our volunteer tutors are certified through a 20-hour, nationally recognized training course offered online, in person, or as a hybrid.
